Abstract

The phenomenon of money politics in the context of general elections in Indonesia, which involves giving money or material rewards to influence voter behavior. This practice is considered to damage the integrity of democracy because it disrupts a fair and proportional process. By referring to various expert views, this study shows that money politics not only violates democratic principles, but also threatens human rights and degrades people’s dignity. From a legal perspective, this practice is contrary to various regulations, such as Articles 47 and 73 of Law no. 1 of 2015 concerning Regional Head Elections. A case study conducted in Nganjuk shows that money politics influences the level of community participation, even though this participation is based on material motivations. This article highlights the importance of strict law enforcement to minimize the negative impact of money politics and the need for public awareness in assessing potential leaders based on their track record and integrity, not based on momentary rewards.
